Update 9 December 2019: there has been an eruption on White Island with more than 5 people losing their lives. Among them Hayden, our lovely guide who showed us the island. RIP Hayden and condolences to Hayden’s family, friends and colleagues and all other people who lost their life.
Have you ever wanted to walk on an active volcano? White Island might be the place for you! If you don’t mind going to New Zealand ๐
A few weeks ago, my New Years Eve plans were messed up by the extreme cold in Canada. I was stuck in my Airbnb and couldn’t get to my location. Every year I try to do something different on the last day of the year.
In 2015 I found myselfย motorbiking the NZ South Islandย and in 2014 I had the weirdest,ย alcohol-less New Yearโs Eve in the Maldives. This year it was clear that life doesn’t always the way you want it.
Luckily the year before was still fresh in my head, because I WALKED ON AN ACTIVE VOLCANO.
I spent the day on the volcano, in the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand. First I took the boat with White Island Tours out there, seeing lots of dolphins, and then I walked in the inner crater of White Island – while the steam was getting out!
I also tasted the volcano… don’t ask me why ๐
Here’s the White Island video!
As you can see, it was a beautiful day out. For more information on the trip, read my detailed volcano blogpost HERE.
Such a fun adenture ! ๐ This looks so cool, I never thought about hiking an active volcano adding this to my bucket list – with tasting it ahah.
Awesooome!! I love NZ! I didn’t visited White Island but experienced something similar, geothermal activities around Rotorua were pretty cool.
I love that tradition of doing something crazy on the last day of the year! I have been to the active volcano in Hawaii, it was awesome! Need to get over to NZ!
I haven’t walk on active volcano, but it seems like a crazy experience! The video you made is great, made me feel like I am there with you! It looks so cool but also scary, I am surprise they actually let people to walk there ๐
Thanks Ada! It is very safe – they monitor the volcano very closely, and they warn you to not go off track. I highly recommend doing it! It’s definitely an experience ๐
Great video! And what an adventure! I would definitely take a walk on an active volcano. Out of curiosity what camera did to use to film here?
Thanks Lindsey! I shot it on a Canon 70D, and also used a GoPro and one shot is with a drone.
This is awesome! I honestly don’t know if I would have done this, but I love seeing you do it.
Thanks Michelle! It’s less scary than it looks! The boiling mud was so cool though, but I stayed at a distance ๐
Ooh that’s pretty cool! I was recently in New Zealand but didn’t try walking on a volcano though.. On my bucket list for next time ๐ Great video!
Thanks Josephine!
This is so cool! I can only imagine the smell of the sulphur though- I think you probably braver and wore your mask less than I would have done!
I really like the dolphins too, what an awesome way to spend a day – volcanoes and dolphins!
I couldn’t believe those dolphins! We saw so many on the way there and on the way back – just insane! It made the day even more perfect ๐
What a bubbly adventure! Now that you ask, yes, I want to walk on an active volcano! By the way, I have the same tradition for New Year!
That’s cool that you do the same! I hope one day you’ll get to walk on an active volcano too!
